Fabrizio Romano Reveals Amorim Believes Man United Have Just Signed “The Next Big Thing”

Man United head coach Ruben Amorim is backing new signing Senne Lammens to become “the next big thing”, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Belgian was recruited on Deadline Day for an initial €21m (£18.1m) and, speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said Amorim’s faith in Lammens has forced Andre Onana to seek first-team football elsewhere:

“It is important to say Manchester United brought in Lammens, and the understanding is that Ruben Amorim and Manchester United management (as they invested in Lammens) believe that the Belgian goalkeeper can be the next big thing.”

“He can be a really important goalkeeper, not just someone who can sit on the bench for the whole season, and so they want Lammens to play. They want Lamnens, obviously, to compete with [Altay] Bayindir, but to play, and this is why Andre Onana feels that probably at Manchester United there is not going to be enough space for him.”

What is the situation with Onana?

The 29-year-old is expected to sign for Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor on loan for the rest of the season. No loan fee will be paid, and there is no purchase option included in the deal.

However, Onana’s wages are expected to be paid in full, and there is the potential for him to earn almost double his salary based on performance-related bonuses.

Will Lammens start for Man United in the derby?

It would be a big call for Amorim to throw in his new signing for such an important fixture, but if he does have as much faith in the keeper as Romano claims, then he will surely select him to play against Manchester City this weekend.

With Onana seemingly on his way out of Old Trafford, the only real alternative to Lammens is Bayindir, and the Turkish international is not exactly a safe pair of hands either. It will be a risk whoever Amorim decides to start in goal.
