Gary Lineker has suggested that Man Utd could end up selling a forward who is “miles ahead” of summer transfer target Anthony Gordon.
The Newcastle winger has been linked with a summer move to Old Trafford, but he is competing for his spot with Marcus Rashford at international level, and Lineker claims the latter has had a much better campaign:
“I think at the moment, Rashford’s miles ahead. Anthony Gordon, but Anthony’s not had a brilliant season. He’s done well in the Champions League, Anthony Gordon. His numbers are not very good in the Premier League.”
Rashford is currently on loan at Barcelona, who have the option to buy the 28-year-old at the end of the season for €30m (£26m).
How do Rashford and Gordon compare in the stats?
The Barca loanee has scored 10 goals and provided 13 assists in 34 appearances so far this campaign, which means he is averaging 1 goal contribution every 1.48 games.
Gordon, meanwhile, has 10 goals and 4 assists in 33 matches, giving him an average of 1 in 2.35 matches. While Rashford is undoubtedly performing better than this England teammate, the gap between the two players is not quite as vast as Lineker suggests.
Can Man Utd keep Rashford?
It all depends on Barcelona and the player. If they trigger their purchase clause, the winger will move to the Camp Nou on a permanent basis on July 1st.
However, there is a feeling that the La Liga champions will try to negotiate down the price, and that could hand United the chance to retain the player’s services.
Interim manager Michael Carrick is said to be keen on keeping hold of Rashford if he becomes the club’s permanent head coach, but he would need to persuade the player as well, who is reportedly looking to leave Old Trafford.
