Man Utd ‘Expected To Make Approach’ For 44 y/o Manager Within ‘Days’

Man Utd are set to hold talks with former Manchester United player and assistant head coach Michael Carrick about taking charge of the Red Devils until the end of the season, according to reports.

Darren Fletcher has taken first-team responsibilities temporarily following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, but it is believed he may only be in the dugout for two games at the very most.

Fletcher will be picking the team for the match against Burnley at Turf Moor tomorrow, as well as potentially the FA Cup tie versus Brighton this weekend.

However, The I Paper claim that Carrick is seen as the frontrunner to take the job on an interim basis. The club are reportedly “expected to make an approach” in a matter of “days” to ascertain whether the 44-year-old would be open to the offer.

Why are Man Utd looking to Carrick?

It is believed that Director of Football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada don’t want to make the same mistake they made with Amorim by appointing someone midseason. They want to give the next long-term appointment a fair crack of the whip in terms of being given a transfer window and a full preseason to implement his ideas.

Carrick is seen as a safe pair of hands who can hold down the fort until the summer. The former Middlesbrough boss has been United caretaker manager before.

Following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking, he won 2 and drew 1 of his three games in charge, before ceding control to interim Ralf Rangnick. Ironically, he would be taking the Rangnick role in this scenario.

Who are the favourites to replace Amorim in the long term?

The I Paper have named Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna, Marseille’s Roberto De Zerbi and former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca as potential options.

However, they have ruled out Gareth Southgate from the running. The former England manager had meetings about taking the position in the past, but he won’t be considered this time around.
