Peter Schmeichel Sends Man United Telling Verdict On Senne Lammens After Andre Onana Decision

We asked former Man United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel whether he’s been impressed by Senne Lammens so far.

The Red Devils opted to sign Senne Lammens in the summer for a fee of £18m, from Belgian side Royal Antwerp, and it was seen as a strange decision at the time. Man United were linked to Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez, but they chose to sign Lammens instead.

United’s data-based scouting model brought up Lammens as a goalkeeper who could become one of Europe’s best shot-stoppers, and things have looked positive so far. They decided to replace Andre Onana with the 23-year-old.

Lammens has made 16 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils, conceding 21 goals and keeping three clean sheets. In his first game, Man United fans were heard chanting ‘Are you Schmeichel in disguise’.

Schmeichel gives verdict on “excellent” Lammens

As it is Lammens’ first year at Old Trafford, we decided to ask Peter Schmeichel what he thinks of the United keeper as comparisons have already been made to himself.

He told us via Sky Bet: “He [Senne Lammens] is who he is, and the way he plays is good for the team. You can see the impact of having that calm presence behind them – it gives the whole side more confidence.

“He comes out for crosses when he needs to, which is excellent. They can play the ball back to him, he’s comfortable taking part in the build-up, and overall, he’s doing well. I think we should focus on that, rather than comparing him to everyone who came before him.”

What will happen to Andre Onana?

Onana was essentially forced out of the club by Ruben Amorim, and so he completed a loan move to join Turkish side Trabzonspor in the summer.

The Cameroon international has made 15 appearances since moving to Turkey, conceding 24 goals, and keeping three clean sheets.

He is due to return to Man United in the summer, and will only have one year left on his contract. So, the Red Devils will likely plan to cash in and sell him in the summer transfer window.
